Lesson III: Expressions of Desire

There are two ways  to express a desire or wish. When what one desires requires a noun (I want a camera,I would like a phone etc) "hoshi(to want)" is used. The object of a verb(for example,a camera) is marked with the particle "ga",not "o".

The basic structure is: (someone) は (something) ほしい  です.
  • わたし は 車 が ほしい です。(I would like a car)
  • わたし は カメラ  が  ほしい です。(I would like a camera)
  • わたし は 日本人の 友達  ほしい です。(I want a Japanese friend)
When what one wants involves an action(I want to go,I want to play) the stem of a verb "-tai"
 (たい) is used.
  • 日本へ いきたいです。(I want to go to Japan)
  • すき焼き たべたい です。(I want to eat sukiyaki)
Negation:
  • たべたくないです。(I don't want to eat)
  • どこもいきたくないです(I don't want to go anywhere)
Using double verbs:
  • イタリヤへないにいきたいです。(I want to go to Italy to learn music)
  • モンバサビリヤニたべたいにいきたいです(I want to go to Mombasa to eat biryani)
  • こえん へ さんぽんいきたいです。(I want to go to the park for a work)
Negative and past tense of ほしい
  • Present Affirmative: ほしい です
  • Present Negative:ほしくないです
  • Past Affirmative:ほしかつかたです
  • Past Negative:ほしくなかったです

Negative and past tense of たい
  • Present Affirmative:たいです
