Lesson 1: Counters

  

The Japanese numbering system is a bit peculiar to English speakers,this is mainly because it is in units of four instead of three as we are conversant with.This can make conversion into English a bit tricky.Also,there are what we call counters,which are required for counting different types of objects,animals and people.


1. COUNTER FOR MONEY




The table above shows the counter for money. Take note that you should say yoen for four yen, not yonen.

Note: The first 10 days, the 14th, 19th, 20th, 29th have special readings that must be separately memorized.

7. COUNTERS FOR AGE




The table above shows the Japanese age counters using onyomi. You just need to append (sai) to the number to get the respective age. Take note that ages like 1,8,10, 20, 30 and all the ages in the tens have to be pronounced differently.
